AI Chatbot-assisted Behavior Management During Pediatric Dental Treatment

Abstract

Pediatric dental treatment is frequently associated with fear, anxiety, and uncooperative behavior, which can complicate
communication and reduce the effectiveness of clinical care. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots represent an
emerging digital approach for supporting behavior management by providing interactive, child-friendly communication
before and during dental treatment. These systems can deliver age-appropriate explanations, answer questions, provide
reassurance, introduce children to dental instruments and procedures, and offer distraction through conversational games or
storytelling. By presenting information in short, accessible interactions, chatbot-assisted interventions may improve children’s
understanding and sense of predictability while reducing anxiety associated with unfamiliar clinical environments. Chatbots
may also support caregivers by providing preparation instructions and reinforcing positive behavioral strategies outside the
dental clinic. However, their implementation requires careful attention to developmental appropriateness, accuracy, privacy,
safety, and the limitations of automated systems in recognizing complex emotional responses. AI should therefore complement
rather than replace professional pediatric dental judgment and established behavior-management techniques. Future research
should evaluate chatbot effectiveness through controlled clinical studies measuring anxiety, cooperation, treatment completion,
patient satisfaction, and caregiver acceptance. Properly designed systems could contribute to more personalized, engaging,
and efficient pediatric dental experiences while maintaining human-centered clinical care.
